In paper published today in Nature Plants, researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, detail for the first time the scale of threatened species that are unable to be conserved in seed banks. Efforts are underway to try and get the river locks on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal closed in order to stop the spread of two invasive species of fish known as the Asian carp and the Snakehead. The fast-breeding and voracious fish -- often called aquatic vacuum cleaners -- have wiped out native species and put a major dent in recreational fishing and boating on the lakes and rivers they invade.
